Project management is a widely recognised and in-demand skill. It requires leadership, vision, tenacity and the ability to delegate to colleagues and help them play to their strengths. As Henry Ford once said, “Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs”.
At face value, it sounds simple, but great project managers aren’t easy to come by and nor are the skills. It takes hard work, dedication and a qualification that provides a strong foundation for building a career.
Several future female leaders in the project management field, those who will raise the bar to set new standards and reinvent the wheel, have found their professional feet through TANZ eCampus’ New Zealand Certificate in Project Management Level Four.
TANZ eCampus student, manager and mother of two, Miriam Wells, says she is already applying what she is learning to the workplace. “I’m really impressed with the new information I’m learning. I’m going to implement what I’ve learnt about defining the scope (of a project) in more detail and producing project charters as well as other bits and pieces.”
For Lynette Bokany, of the New Zealand Defence Force, it was the opportunity to study project management part time that was particularly attractive. “I really enjoyed the flexibility and ability to study at my own pace and in my own time,” she says. “I wanted to broaden my knowledge in something outside of my current skill base. I was also motivated by the need for a new challenge.”
The desire to gain more knowledge in project management and have flexibility is a sentiment that resonates with Nikki Davidson, an Operations Manager who wasn’t satisfied with her current skill base and wanted to upskill for a new position.
“I want to do the best I can at everything I do. My job involves organising staff, running jobs and scheduling work. I thought a course in project management could help me to better understand what I need to do and how to do it.
“I really enjoy having the ability to study when I have the time and wherever I might be. I also like the online videos and course reading and have found the course facilitators are always available when I need them.”
