Most people drift along, happy to take things day by day. They only make big decisions when forced to by circumstances outside their control. It’s a reactive way to live. Imagine being proactive; where you have a long-term plan, and have control over most things in your life. It’s hard to think 10 or 20 years out, but five years is manageable.
Think about where you’d like to be in five years, at work, at home, in your relationships. Do a brain dump, get a little dreamy if you like, but mostly, be realistic, and the more detail you can imagine, the better. Then write down your plan. Focus on your priorities.
In a work situation you might want to be your own boss, or be the boss in the organisation where you work. You may see yourself taking a break from work, or starting your own business, working from home. You may see yourself doing more study. Decide what you want, then make a plan to get there. Think about your health, your relationships, your social life, your relationships, how you live.
Having written down how you would like your life to be in five years, work out a plan to achieve it, setting mini goals along the way. If you break it down into days, weeks and years then it won’t seem daunting. (Like eating the elephant, bite by bite.)
If you set down your goals, they will give you clarity on what you need to change, either about yourself or for yourself. You will discover what you need to do to achieve your five-year plan.
It could be that you create a ‘vision’ board, cutting out pictures of things you want to do or have. However you choose to display your plan, use timelines and markers and make sure your plan’s in a prominent place. Of course unexpected and unplanned things will happen along the way – that’s life – but with a clear view in mind you will feel better equipped to deal with the unexpected.
Ignore the fear, the doubt and the naysayers and take control.
Many people gain confidence and satisfaction by adding to their skill set, or by completely changing careers. Often that can involve more study, either full time or part time. TANZ eCampus is an ideal choice for people. Participants study in their own time, with input and direction from tutors who are specialists in their fields.
Go on, start imagining your best future now.
