If you are working in the construction sector, you will know that it’s not all about building. There is a raft of legislative requirement to understand, including the Resource Management and Building Acts as well as district planning regulations and building consents. On top of that there is a real need to be aware of sustainable construction practice. It’s a serious business! If you feel you have a gap in knowledge, or you want to take a lead role on site with these requirements, this course is the place to start.

- Understand sustainable construction principles
In this course you will gain a clear understanding of sustainable principles of construction. You will develop the knowledge and confidence to understand the advantages and practical application of sustainable design as well as the ability to identify and overcome the challenges associated with delivery.
- Know your rights, responsibilities and legal requirements
Don’t get caught out! Become that team member that has a great handle on legislative and consent requirements associated with the commercial or residential build. Know what the implications of the Resource Management Act, Building Act or District Plan might be and how to deliver on these requirements appropriately. Make sure you have a clear understanding of building consents and compliance certification.
- Understand key on site and off-site roles
Learn the responsibilities, obligations and roles of every member of the construction project from client and architect or designer through to engineer and contract administrator.
- Take your professionalism seriously
The professional ethics of those operating in the construction sector must be taken seriously. There are professional codes of practice to adhere to. Make sure you understand these and can guide your team to meet requirements.

How long will it take?
This course is delivered over 10 weeks. You can expect to spend around 150 hours of total study time for this 15 credit course. So, to complete this course successfully in the 10 weeks you must be prepared to devote approximately 15 hours per week to your study. Depending on your previous academic online experience and course level this may vary.
Please note: The New Zealand Diploma in Construction (Level 6) can only be studied part-time which means that you may only study one course at a time.
