If a sound understanding of the key elements of the nature and sources of New Zealand law and the core elements of the New Zealand legal system are crucial in your role then this course will provide you with the knowledge to perform. You will also learn the basic principles of the law of contract, the basic principles of property law and the relevant provisions of the Sale of Goods Act.

Understand the core elements of our legal system
This course will outline the core elements of the New Zealand legal system in particular section 5 (1) of the Interpretation Act to a legislative provision.
Learn the nature and sources of New Zealand law
The course also covers key elements of the nature and sources of New Zealand law including the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s Constitution, an overview of the role of courts and tribunals and the role of case law. You will also learn the basic principles of other legislative Acts and the principles of common law.

How long will it take?
This course is delivered over 19 weeks. NZQA guidelines suggest up to 200 hours of total study time for a 20 credit course. So to complete this course successfully in the 19 weeks you must be prepared to devote approximately 10.5 hours per week to your study. Depending on your previous academic online experience and course level this may vary to a certain degree.

- In January 2015, this qualification was replaced with alternative business qualifications. The last date of assessment for this qualification is December 2020. No new students will be able to enrol in this qualification after 31 December 2017. Please speak to a TANZ eCampus advisor if you require clarification or additional information on this qualification.
- The Introduction to Commercial Law course has a textbook requirement.
