Micro learning courses are short online courses that can be completed by learners in a few hours and at the learner’s own pace. They are becoming more popular as a way of gaining expertise and training on specific core subjects, without the need to undertake extensive studies. But while gaining in popularity, course completion and competencies are not always acknowledged or validated.
With the goal of ‘fixing’ this issue, TANZ eCampus has completed a pilot programme that has the aim of providing validation of micro learning course competencies. And, where better to start than with small business courses.
As a nation of small business owners, and with business success often predicated on an owner’s financial knowledge alongside expertise in their specific business area, TANZ eCampus, as a Xero Learn partner, delivered two pilot micro learning courses on Financial Health for Small Business.
In conjunction with Kineo, the addition of a third partner Credly Acclaim enables recognition (badging) of individuals who have demonstrated appropriate competencies and skills. According to Pamela Simpson CEO of TANZ eCampus, this recognition is hugely important because “badged courses” provide learners with official validation of course completion.
Badges are globally recognised, web enabled versions of a credential, certification or learning outcome. They are only issued by credible training institutes and their achievement can assist with enhanced employment opportunities and professional growth.
Further value, provided through Labour Market Insights, is available on Credly’s Acclaim platform. Learners can find career opportunities by title, location, employer and salary range and recommendations that allow earners to see next steps in learning pathways and professional development opportunities relevant to the badge they have earnt.
The pilot learning is now being assessed with a view to refining the offering before introducing further micro learning and “badged” courses through TANZ eCampus.
